Living Hope Community volunteer project

Location: Cape Town, South Africa

Program Dates: 22 June to 25 July (5 weeks) *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE 2015 PROJECT HAS UNFORTUNATELY BEEN CANCELLED

Price:USD$1995

South Africa has only been free of apartheid and segregation for fifteen years. The heroic story of Nelson Mandela and his ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ following 27 years in prison under the minority white government was followed by his election in 1994 and exemplary presidency of what became known as the Rainbow Nation.

Few places in the world can boast a more spectacular setting than Cape Town, which is cradled in a vast blue-grey amphitheatre formed by Table Mountain. Curving south into the Atlantic Ocean like an eroded sickle, the Cape Peninsula has always presented a fearsome challenge to early navigators rounding the tip of Africa. Within the vast beauty of this magnificent country, lie its vibrant people and colourful communities, many of which face day-to-day struggles such as poverty, unemployment and the devastating consequences of HIV/AIDS. On the Living Hope Summer Project you will have the opportunity to get involved several of these areas, as you come alongside and serve the local communities and share the love of Christ.

Living Hope seeks to reach people for Christ, bring hope and break the despair of poverty and disease.
ACTS and Living Hope have worked as partners over the past 8 years.

The exact ministry schedule will be determined by Living Hope and will be adjusted closer to the time, so as to best meet the exact needs of the communities volunteers will be working in. Generally speaking, ministry opportunities will include:

Living Hope is the umbrella name for the organisation. The organisation has several branches of ministry. This volunteer project will mainly involve Living Right Ministry. Living Right is focused on prevention – Teaching kids life skills and Biblical values; Health education and HIV testing for adults and community support groups for those with chronic diseases.

Other branches include: Living Care, which consists of an inpatient clinic and home based nursing care in all of our relevant communities; Living Way, which focuses on job skills and economic development. Living Way also runs an Agricultural Business Training Programme from Living Hope’s main campus; Finally, Living Grace, which runs an outpatient rehabilitation programme for those recovering from substance abuse. They also help to provide adequate and nutritious food to those who cannot afford it, through their Food Share Programme.

Living Right: Holiday, Children & Teens Club
Most of your time spent with Living Hope will be at the Holiday, Children and Teens Club. This takes place during South Africa’s school holiday as a means to keep children from impoverished backgrounds, busy with positive and constructive activities rather than spending time with the wrong crowds as a result of insufficient adult supervision.
You will work alongside our local staff as they lead. The activities during holiday club include activities such as songs, games, sports, arts & crafts, Bible stories and devotionals. Generally you will be spending quality time with children, sharing Christ’s love with them. Teen Club is an opportunity to reach high-risk youth in these same impoverished communities by building encouraging, healthy, Christ-centered, mentor relationships. Involvement includes partnering with the LSES (Life Skills Educators) to help strengthen these relationships.

Living Right: Ministry
Through Living Right Ministry, Living Hope seeks to prevent the spread of chronic illnesses including HIV and AIDS using short and long term strategies among the communities in which it operates. This is achieved through reaching out to pregnant moms, parents, primary school children, teens and adults; hoping to build an AIDS free generation. The ministry consists of Support Group Facilitators, Health Counselors and Life Skills Educators.

The Life Skills Educational Programme, where you will be involved, reaches thousands of students every year. This is done through after school and holiday clubs for children and teenagers that are held in local crèches, schools and colleges. Here students receive value-based education on sexual abstinence and other lifestyle topics. The programme also includes parenting classes extending Living Hope’s influence into the home.

3 Day Garden Route Safari
Optional extra at the end of the volunteer project. The 3 day Garden Route Safari is an excellent opportunity to reflect and look back on their experience over the last few weeks on project.
