29 Jul MAASAI MARA: SUNSHINE AFTER THE RAIN
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
You may have heard about the record-breaking rainfall that Kenya experienced in the first half of 2024, resulting in widespread flooding across not just Kenya, but most of the East Africa region. The flooding caused property damage, loss of life, and displacement of people in certain areas.
The Maasai Mara, an iconic destination, was not spared from the effects of the floods. In early May 2024, heavy rains caused the Mara and Talek rivers to overflow, resulting in significant flooding. Some camps and lodges located near the rivers suffered severe damage. Despite the initial disruption, tourism operators and the Ministry of Tourism in Kenya worked together to prioritize the safety of the affected guests. They quickly moved the guests to safe properties in unaffected areas of the reserve, which minimized cancellations and allowed the guests to continue enjoying their safari experiences. In the face of adversity, the surrounding communities showed resilience and solidarity, coming together to support each other.
After the floodwaters receded, efforts to restore the infrastructure with a focus on responsible rebuilding and innovation began immediately. Many people are using this time to renovate and upgrade their facilities, retrain their staff, and concentrate on enhancing the overall customer experience. Despite the short-term disarrangement caused by the flooding, this season has become an opportunity for the Maasai Mara to emerge even stronger and more resilient.
During these challenging times, we are reminded of the strength found in unity and faith. Through our mission trips and leisure experiences, we have witnessed firsthand the power of compassion and the transformative impact of lending a helping hand. We hold onto hope and continue to uplift one another. Together, we stand strong and united in our efforts to bring healing and restoration to the beautiful communities we serve.
The Maasai Mara reserve has a bright and promising future ahead!
Blessings, ACTS Africa Team
